 Post subject: [BETA 2] q3chaosdm2 - Lava Tomb - HIGH OCTANE

This is the Lava Tomb - reduX map on steroids. I decided that I would try and appease the masses by releasing two versions of Q2Dm6 (like there was a huge outcry for this remake). This version takes all the gimmicks from q2dm6 and flushes them down the toilet...then replaces them with bounce pads, accel pads, item and weapon changes, and all kinds of neat things that speed up gameplay and overall just make it a more fun map for Q3.

If you didnt like Lava Tomb, give this version a try...I think you'll approve ;)

I'd really LOVE to get a good playtest of this map tonight or tomorrow night if possible...please grab it and join us in the server...I'll be monitoring it aaaallll night! :)

Well, since no on else is posting, thought I'd post an update...

The BETA 3 progress is coming along. I've fixed some of the issues people have noticed in beta 2. THe MH can now be grabbed from both bouncepads. I fixed some clipping issues and created some more ledges and such to allow for easier exits from lava.

more trick jumps added

added some more lights, but looks like a few more areas can still use some lighting.

Beta 3 will be released sometime this week with a full compile. Hopefully it will be the last build.

I like this version better than the first. Battle suit is nice, ya don't see that in many maps. With the accel pads, etc you can move around a lot faster. I noticed I was missing the mh some times, but the location is better than beta 1.. Like the ra placement. Can't comment on lighting cuz I play q3 ugly...heh. :D

hehe I play on ugly settings normally even tho I have a pretty decent machine - however I did max out the settings for this map :D

Thanks Q_B, i worked out the MH problem. I kind of like the battle suit too, but I wonder if people will think the map is gay for having it? I dont know what else I'd put there though...

why do people still play Q3 ugly?

A few things.

The map flows a lot faster now that you have added all the pads . But, at the same time, I think you lost a little bit of the original feel by removing all of the 'gimmicky' movers and lifts. I like the pace now, but I dont really like that *all* of the evelvators/movers that made the map unique aren't there. Some of the J-pads are absolutely necesarry, but I would have like to have seen the traps by the old BFG and the rotating doohickey by the rail still in tact. But again, I do think it plays better.

I also think the outdoor jpad that shoots you into that tunnel makes it a) too easy to make a quick getaway, and b) you can actually run both RL's in about 5 seconds if you grab the first (the one outside), hit the pad, and bounce around that corner.

The jumppad textures dont really look like pads, but you get used to them fast. You have a light on a wall textured the same as the pads, which can be slightly confusing.

I love that you have 2 rl's now, and that you added the BS. The BS is not only perfect for this particular map, but the location seems so fitting. Some of the lava wells are a little deep to rj out of however, I dont know if this is good or bad for gameplay.

Anyway, I think it plays much faster and overall I like the changes a lot.

This HO version will be released in "addition" too the original version you beta tested before. I wanted this version to be all about gameplay, and not about the gimmicks. I love the original map the way it stands, it's one of my favorites from Q2. However, those same gimmicks make gameplay quite difficult at times. You're almost fighting the map as much as you're fighting the other players. Not that it make the map any less fun for me, I just can see how some might totally hate the map for that very reason.

I know you can run both RL's kind of fast...assuming you are coming from the lower RL, and assuming no one is outdoors while you try to get to the JPad....however, you only get ONE additional rocket for grabbing that RL..right? You're better off grabbing the 5 pack of rockets that's below the area you land from that Jpad. ;) I see what you're saying, so i'd like some ideas on how to speed up that outdoor area.

I know the jpads dont really look like jpads, I just couldnt find a texture that was suitable for the look of the map and the size of the jpads I'm using. Any suggestions????

I'm working on how to get people out of the lava in some places...beta 3 will have some of those areas "fixed"...suggestions? ;)

Oh I guess I should have read the original post better :)

Ive had the same problem with jump pads in some of my maps, where I couldnt find an effective texture. You could either make a custom texture from scratch if you have PS or something similar, or maybe create a jumppad from brushes. I did this in Cajun Hell and it was pretty effective. Something else you could do that wouldn't look quite as good, but would serve to differentiate the pads a bit and make them stand out more would be to add some effects to them. For instance, in storm3tourney2, I simply added a beam to a light texture and faced it upwards. Wasn't the best solution, but it was effective, and fit the style more of my map or less.

For getting ppl out of lava, I would suggest making the lava about half as deep as it is now, so people can potentially RJ out. It will still be difficult, and will incur a punishment, but you wont just have to sit there waiting to die. You can also have stairs leading out in certain areas, so if your falling into the lava you can sort of guide yourself to a potential exit.

I play q3 ugly, well actually I guess its semi-ugly cuz thats what I'm used to from the competitive ctf days where target visability reigns supreme. Thats force model bright green keel enemies and washed out backgrounds, no projectile smoke, skies turned off, etc. Old dog, new tricks, etc. :D
