I remember this mapping technique where you could place simple 3d structures in the distance as though they were part of the skybox. They would only be rendered when the sky was visible, so you wouldn't have to design a huge map with no vis blocking.

Sorry if I am doing a terrible job explaining this.

1) Does anyone remember what this is called, or if there is a tutorial for it?
2) If not, I remember someone used this technique in the burial-grounds mapping competition. Does anyone know where I can find the competition maps for this?

If anyone could help me out, I'd appreciate it!

Sorry man I don't remember what this is called but if you can find the Q3A map that has the larger asteroids orbiting the level that may be a good example of how it's done.

http://lvlworld.com/review/id:1637 << this map has same skybox

I can't remember which stock map had it and I don't have Q3A on this machine. Quake Live doesn't have the map I'm thinking of.

Hm. No I am thinking of a map where actual 3d objects are present sort of between the level itself and the skybox, not embedded in the box itself.

I actually found the one from the burial-grounds competition:

Those big buildings in the background are not big brushes on the outskirt of the map - they are drawn like the skybox. I just need to figure out what this is called and how to do it. Its a cool little technique that I thought was under utilized at the time.
