I'm looking to install linux on a second computer, and I'm looking for suggestions on a good distro. One tht will be fairly easy to install and has a nice gui ;)

This system will eventually be running the official Burial-Grounds ET:Quake Wars server, so it should be a solid distro....yah, I know...it's linux...they're all solid. !fub2

So, let em fly...distro suggestions...good resources...things to know..etc..etc..

I'm using gentoo on my desktop and fedora core 5 on my laptop at the moment, but I would have to second necrosis's suggestion on ubuntu... I'm looking forward to trying it myself at some point when I have some spare time.

I think Xandros and Suse are the most user friendly and Windows like.

As I said in another linux post here, I've been using Gentoo as my desktop. I dont recommend this to a newbie. For you, saying you need a good server OS, I would recommend Fedora Core 5. it's pretty and secure. It includes SElinux by default which further locks down processes making them harder to attack. I would look into that myself if I didnt know Gentoo as well as I do.

I've been playing with LiveCD distros...

From a whole bunch, I've zeroed in on:

DSL (damnsmalllinux .org) Knoppix based
Puppy (puppylinux.org) Knoppix based
SLAX (slax.linux-live.org) Slackware based
PCLinuxOS (pclinuxos.com)

All allow online installations of software packages from
online repository sites.

So... install a 100-meg linux, and then download another
2 gigs of software that YOU want, makes for a real
customized personal linux.

I'm liking puppy a lot, 20 sec boot and 15 sec shutdown,
but SLAX and PCLinuxOS feel more like full distros.
