Computer help from you GEEKS out there (I'm too cool to know this stuff)

...Will a current day Pentium 4 run the new windows coming out next year? I heard from someone yesterday that "vista" or "Longhorn".. whatever.. will ONLY run on 64bit CPU's (Like the new AMD64)....

ALSO.. I am thinking of ordering an barebones AMD64/3400 system shortly... and it says "ATA" support for HD.. will IDE drives work on that mobo?

..and... geeze.. with a GeFroce4Ti4200.... (I know it will be the bottleneck for now)... but will it still run D3/Q4 better than on my current AMD1700+

I don't know the system requirements but you can bet that Microsoft will want to make it as backwards compatible as possible. I would think that the system requirements would be not too far above what Windows XP are now, but the more the better. Anything you buy now will almost surely run it, it's not like games. :)

Vista does not require 64bit processor.

The ATA interface defines the connection and speed for the interface between the hard drive and the computer. It could be serial, or IDE.

Right, the GeFroce4Ti4200 will be the bottleneck. Yes a 'current day Pentium 4' (with sufficient RAM) WILL run D3/Q4 better than on your current AMD1700+.

Its possible that your 'barebones' system won't have an AGP slot so be careful... I recommend choosing first a specific motherboard, rather than a 'barebones system' so you know what you're getting, and build it up from there.

Tx.. good straight answers! The mobo is a good one.. highly rated from what I found.. an MSI K8N NEO-FSR Socket 754 MotherBoard.

Here's the barebones unit.. seems good for the price... I upped the RAM to 1/2 gig and CPU to 3400

I will get a new video card within a month or two.. what is a good budget card these days? I can't go spending $300 or anyting like that.. but I imagine most cards (even less than $100) would beat my GeForce4

MHO
For a $269 (barebones system) you SHOULD 'go spend... $300 or anything like that' on a vidcard. Worth the wait...

Building a new system today, I wouldn't go any lower than 1gb ram. Some games like Battlefield 2 actually say 2gb is the preferred amount.
