I got my CD's today for a PC install and ran the first disc .....now I'm waiting for Steam to do an install of the game. WTF is Steam and why is it also trying to install Disk 1?

Thanks.

Runs great. I had to upgrade drivers but it runs fine. NVIDIA has a sweet upgrade/install program. In the old days, upgrading drivers meant uninstalling the old driver then installing the new. A real pain as you had to run windows in Safe mode then install.

Followed this step by step and it works now. I could probably stand to go into the config and bump up the texture res, but it's running well now.

I am still in game overload mode.

I ordered many inexpensive games through Steam, and I am still struggling to find the time to play them all.

But I bit the bullet and ordered Rage from New Egg today, since they were offering a ten dollar gift card with the purchase, that I will probably use to buy another thumb drive.

It should be interesting to see if Steam will apply the patches automatically when I load it from the disks, since they should have the time to get them together by the time it is delivered.

Any way, it should be interesting to see how it works on my PC, with it's Radeon 5770 1 gig card, it's Athlon 2 quad core 2.9 GHz processor, and 4 gigs of ram with Win 7 32 bit.

To Unisaw: I don't see a Rage server in my future for now, and Steam is IMHO the greatest boon to PC gaming to come along in a long time. They market some excellent games, some of which were cutting edge only a short time ago, and if you catch their sales, you can get them for rock bottom prices. For example, I bought Metro 2033 for 5 dollars, and I enjoyed playing through it immensely. The game supports DX11, has great graphics and artwork, a very good storyline, and two different endings, so I plan to play it again. Steam is so popular, that on any given day there are usually more than 2 million players logged on to Steam.

Thanks. I'm learning. I didn't have to add the cache folder so Steam might have fixed that and other things.

Regarding Steam:

The update for the PC has been released - does it come automatically or do I have to d/l from steam?

Good question. I play on the xbox 360 but I was mainly trying to give all of the PC guys a heads up of Todd's message on twitter. I would imagine that if you patched it yourself Steam would eventually figure it out or you can wait for Steam to do it, but I don't buy games from Steam so i do not know.

Steam automatically downloads it for you - you can also chose automatic updates enabled.
-Click on the game
-Right click and select properties.
-Go to updates and enable.

Yes, that is another great feature of Steam.

I have noticed that when I log on to Steam, and go to my library of Steam games, it already is downloading patches. It highlights the game that is being patched, and shows me the progress of the download, then applies it automatically when it reaches 100%.

Then a little pop up box appears telling me that the patch is complete.

And I have never, out of more than fifty games i have registered on steam, ever had a patch break anything.

That is a great thing in itself, considering some of the problems with patches i have had in the past.

FWIW I went to play some RAGE on Saturday and steam informed me "This game is currently unavailable. Please try again at another time."

WHAT?!

So I tried it again, checked my internet connection, other games worked but no RAGE>

Turns out the rage.exe executable was gone. I figure a patch gone awry. I had to load up the dvd and 'reinstall' and 30 minutes LATER..... I was able to play the damn game.

Steam sucks, IMHO. Plain and simple.

I agree aside from HL2 and HL2 MODs I don't use it. I'm old I guess because I actually prefer to own the physical media for what I purchased.

As often as I format and reload my machine I don't want to have to worry about that.
