doh, looks like you have to pre-purchase to get the beta?

Thought this was coming out on 10/10. Little late for a beta no?

The Orange Box really pisses me off.

I bought an ATI Radeon All In Wonder 9600 Pro card fpr 250.00 to set up a multimedia pc that I am using as my spare pc now, because they were offering Half Life 2 as a bonus.

Then I bought The next Half life 2 episode.

Then I bought an MSI mobo with an AMD Athlon processor to get a second copy of Half Life 2 that my grandson plays.

Now they are giving away all of the previous games I paid big bucks to purchase, for next to nothing, and their excuse for this is that you can give them to a friend if you already paid for them.

That sucks! they should allow me to buy the new games sparately for a reasonable price, since I have paid for the ones that I already own.

Sorry, I posted a bit prematurely from work, I got all excited.

Yep looks like you had to pre-order orange box on Steam to qualify for the BETA.

I got the beta and it took about 2 hrs of total crashes where I had to hit the reset button to get it to work.

Had to set the game to the lowest settings at 800 by 600 to finally get it to work, even though the recommended settings shown for my system were very much higher.

I would characterise the gameplay as about as good as Quake 4 or Doom 3 was when they were released. Very slow and sluggish movement.

The models for the different classes are pretty cool. It makes you think you are playing in some kind of comic book adventure.

In my opinion, Valve has a lot of work to do to get the bugs out of this game. If you go to the Steam forums you will see that many others are having the same issues I had trying to get it to work, and they had ATI cards, which is the "recommended" card of choice for this game, as show by the unabashed advertisement that is displayed when you first start it up.

When I have had a chance to play it some more, and adjust the graphic and sound settings, I will post more about my findings.

Hello all,

Well, I have had a completely different experience than Spidy here. I have had no problems whatsoever, but I guess that I am lucky since there are indeed lots of people (especially ATI users) having problems with the game. It's still in beta though...

On the other hand, the gameplay seems very very polished right now. There are a few tweaks that need to be made imo (the pyro seems useless so far), but it's one seriously fun game. I love the artistic direction: it feels like you're partaking actively in a Pixar animation, and it's a welcome change from all the plastic bump mapped looking graphics you can see in recent shooters.
The gameplay is pretty frantic, and the learning curve is pretty small, and from what I've seen there's a good potential for a deep layered strategic approach to playing this title, especially with all the classes available. The spy is great to play with, the medic (my fav character since I've always liked playing support chars) is actually usefull this time around, the heavy is a devastator, and so on...

To sum it up: this is probably going to be my next multiplayer game of choice... not ETQW :( : I can't afford much time playing lately, so this is a perfect fix.

If anyone else is in the beta (ie: has pre purchased the game, feel free to add me as your friend: look for mogwaee)

Hi MogWaEE!

Since my last post, I have had the opportunity to make some adjustments to my settings for the game, and play it some more.

I am enjoying it a lot more now that I have no more issues with lockups, and I have been able to jack up the graphics settings.

It seems that the gameplay has improved quite a bit since my first experience. Maybe Valve made some adjustments to the game to improve this.

I still enjoy realism in a game, though, and even though this game looks like it will be a fun experience, I still think that ETQW is better, especially because of the ability to deploy more items for offense and defense, and the ability to operate the many vehicles and aircraft.

Mogouk!!!...err Mogwaee!!

SUP!

How many maps are in the beta? Probably hard to judge a class's usefulness on just one map if that's the case. Wish I could play it. I don't want to pre-order just to try a beta though.

Hiya Stinko

Moved back to Paris to settle in with my girlfriend, so my gaming time is toned down lots. Some of my french buddies even asked me to pick up WoW again... but I simply couldn't: I remember how much of a life sucker it was.

As for TF2, the beta is pretty much the full game: 6 maps, two game modes, 9 classes: lots of fun.

Glad to hear TF2 is playing well. I'm definitely going to get it. It's even better to see you around MogWaEE!!!

So, why will you not be playing ETQW??? Kinda sad to hear that!! :(
