In trying to keep my upgrade costs under $1,000 USD, this is the system I have ready to order

https://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/Wi ... newsystem2

It comes to a little more then 1k before you add to cart, and then there are about $50 in rebates. I may hold off on the arctic cooler until I decide to overclock, then purchase it locally.

Anyway, I'm looking to make this purchase tonight, so looking for some feedback before then.

BTW, I'm upgrading from these specs:

CPU: XP 2700
RAM: 1GB PC 2700
VIDEO: Geforce 6600
MB: Asus A7N8X
PS: 300W
HDD: Multiple drives totaling 200gb
DVD: Sony external dvd writer
CD: Plextor CD Writer

I'm keeping the cd and dvd drives and will likely keep at least one of the older hdd's in for backup purposes.

If your not overclocking the stock cooler will be fine - you should also be able to clock to about 2.4gig on the stock cooler - above that is very quickly becomes inadequate.

I have no experience with that motherboard but everything else I would have reccomended.

Looks like good stuff, Chaos. It will blow away your current system. I know stability is important to you, so you may want to consider an Intel chipset based motherboard instead. I use a 680i sli nforce board personally and have had no problems with it, but message boards are full of people reporting numerous issues with it. They are all based on the same reference design and built by foxconn. I believe this is also true for the 650i.

If you're ever in Boston, chaos, check out Microcenter on Memorial Blvd. An impressive selection of computer parts.

Sometimes its fun to check it out in person, especially items like cases, etc. I go up there once every two months just to window shop :D

Who knows, you might get it tuesday!

I am very envious. Guess I will have to wait and see how ET Quake Wars performs on my system before I let the moths out of my wallet.

ug, lost a huge reply I had for this thread.

Anyway, the system is running good. Using it right now actually. I still have some driver updates and such to go through, but it's running real nice as it is.

The whole system went together real nice, posted fine and I buzzed through the bios and windows xp install no problem. I havent had time to do much else, but hopefully with the long weekend I'll get all the driver updates, windows fixes, and some software/game installs completed. I also have a ton of data to transfer from the other system...it's going to be a choir.

I bought a new keyboard and mouse to go with the new system...the keyboard is a Nexxtech NX2, which is nothing special but it's my first USB keyboard and it looks real stylish :) The new mouse is a Creative Fatal1ty 1010 gaming mouse. It's really comfortable, and having the interchangable weights is a real nice touch. I prefer a heavier mouse, so being able to change that was nice. It's also way more sensitive and accurate then my old microsoft mouse....so it's going to take a little getting used to.

Anyway, I'm excited about the new system, I cant wait to get some games installed and benchmarked :)
